A basic result in complex analysis is that the only simply connected domain in the complex plane which is not biholomorphic to the unit disc is the whole plane.

In contrast, Fatou and Bieberbach discovered that in higher dimension there are proper open subsets of C^n which are still biholomorphic to the whole space. There are many results and open questions related to this phenomenon.

There will be an assessment at the end.
