This course could be considered as a complement of Prof. Feng Luo’s course on low dimensional geometry and topology. The main focus of this course is on the spaces of hyperbolic structures on surfaces, namely, the Teichmuller space and its variations, the character varieties. Some topological and algebraic constructions, such as the Goldman bracket and the skein algebras and their relationship with the Teichmuller space and character varieties will also be discussed.
 

Depending on the time and interest, some related open problems and recent results will be mentioned and introduced.

 

 

Prerequisite:

 
algebraic topology (fundamental groups and covering spaces) and Riemannian geometry (Riemannian metrics and geodesics).
