Abstract:

 

Arithmetic subgroups \Gamma of semisimple Lie groups G act properly and isometrically on the associated symmetric space X=G/K, and the quotients \Gamma \ X are locally symmetric spaces. One important application of locally symmetric spaces is that  \Gamma \ X provide explicit models of classifying spaces of \Gamma and can be used to study cohomology groups of \Gamma and the Baum-Connes conjecture and Novikov conjectures for \Gamma.

 
In this talk, we will give an introduction to and survey of some basic facts, open problems and recent results on the topology of locally symmetric spaces.
