Introduction of Speaker Richard Hamilton is Davies Professor of Mathematics at Columbia University. He received his Ph.D. in 1966 from Princeton University. Prof. Hamilton made groundbreaking contributions to differential geometry, and is one of the most influential mathematicians. In 1983, he published a seminal paper in which the Ricci Flow was invented. Since then, Hamilton and his theory of Ricci flow played a central role in differential geometry and topology. Over the years, Prof. Hamilton developed and laid out a whole program to use the Ricci flow to approach the Poincare conjecture and Thurston’s geometrization conjecture. Hamilton was awarded the Oswald Veblen Prize in Geometry in 1996 and the Clay Research Award in 2003. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1999 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003. He also received the AMS Leroy P.
