Abstract. The prescribed Jacobian equation concerns the prescription of the Jacobian determinant of a mapping which depends on a solution and its gradient. These equations arise in optimal transportation and geometric optics. We will outline a general theory covering both global and local approaches which extends optimal transportation theory. An essential ingredient of this theory is a general theory of convexity. We also consider recent applications to near field reflection problems for both point source and parallel beams.
