Abstract:

 

 

For many nonlinear partial differential equations, such as the celebrated compressible Euler equations of gas dynamics, no matter how smooth the initial data are, the singularity will form in a finite time and the solutions will become discontinuous. This is a nonlinear phenomena since the wave speeds depend on waves themselves, in sharp contrast to the linear equations. In this talk, I will discuss some basic concepts of discontinuous solutions of hyperbolic equations of conservation laws (the basic conservation laws are of mass, momentum and energy) and entropy conditions for the discontinuous solutions.
