1st Lecture: On the Relativistic Astrophysics Domains

The pioneering works of C.C. Lin and Frank Shu born in the domain of classical optical astronomy have evolved, following the observations of the flat rotation curves of galaxies by the Dutch radio astronomers, into the realm of Physics. The crucial issue of determining the matter distribution of our galaxy has open the new field of "dark matter" and the yet evolving physics of the "inos" quantum charged particles interacting mainly gravitationally. The field is further evolving into the realm of General Relativity addressing the problematic, also daily evolving, of the nature of the core of our own galaxy.


Similarly the observations of Pulsars born in the domain of radio classical astronomy have evolved, following the observations of the binary X ray sources by the UHURU satellite, into the realm of General Relativity with the discovery of the first "Black Hole" in our galaxy, hypothesized in 1971 by Ruffini and Wheeler. This field has been further evolving in recent months with the "long march" of almost forty years of the understanding of Gamma Ray Bursts demonstrating, almost daily the formation of "Black Holes" in our entire Universe.


The historical unprecedented development of observational techniques from space, the ground and underground in all wavebands of the electromagnetic spectrum as well as of neutrinos and ultra-high- energy-cosmic rays (UHECR), is offering a new occasion for improving the quality of life and the advancing the frontier of the understanding of the Universe. Relativistic astrophysics is offering in these days the reaching of the understanding of new Relativistic Astrophysics domain both in the classical and quantum domain, the dream of Albert Einstein, in the understanding of the GeV emission of Binary Driven Hyper novae BDHNE with the AGILE telescope and the LAT telescope flown in the FERMI satellite, both using Italian technologies.

Bio: Remo Ruffini (Director of ICRANet and President of ICRA)
Director of ICRANet (ICRA Network), coauthor of 722 scientific publications and 13 books, Remo Ruffini received his doctorate at Sapienza in Rome in 1967. He taught in Hamburg, at Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study, in Japan, Australia and CBPF (Brazil). Some of his major results: boson stars, “Introducing the Black Hole” with J.A. Wheeler, and the limiting critical mass of neutron stars. He identified the first black hole in our Galaxy using UHURU satellite data with Giacconi (Nobel recipient 2002), and received the Cressy Morrison Award (1973). Returning to Sapienza (1978), he promoted a Rome-Stanford collaboration on gravitational wave detectors. With European, US and Chinese institutions he established the International Center for Relativistic Astrophysics (ICRA) and later ICRANet in Italy, Armenia, France and Brazil (2005). He developed an understanding of gamma ray bursts, confirmed by the largest telescopes on Earth and from space: from their discovery in 1973, to their cosmological origin in 1997, to determining seven different GRBs families and their conceptual understanding, in 2018. This has enabled GRBs, the largest explosions in the Universe, to be used to enlighten our comprehension of the Universe.


雷莫·鲁菲尼(Remo Ruffini)教授是天体物理学领域著名教授,著有722篇论文和13部专著,主要成果包括提出玻色子恒星概念、中子星临界质量极限,合著《引入黑洞》(Introducing the Black Hole),并与贾科尼(Giacconi,诺贝尔奖得主,2002年)一起,利用UHURU卫星数据首次发现银河系中的黑洞。鲁菲尼教授与欧洲、美国和中国的机构共同建立了国际相对论天体物理学中心(ICRA),2005年在意大利、亚美尼亚、法国和巴西建立了ICRANet。
