Description :

Solutions have a significant role in the understanding and applications of physical theories. String theory is not an exception as many of its properties, like dualities, branes and black holes can be understood by investigating certain classical solutions. I shall review the methods used to find such solutions.  Then I shall develop the tools that can be used to describe their geometry. At the end of the course I shall present some recent results that include a generalization of the Lichnerowicz theorem and aspects of the classification of AdS backgrounds in 10- and 11-dimensions. Some applications in string theory and in AdS/CFT will also be described.
