Professor Shiu-Yuen Cheng is now a MSC full-time and permanently member. Before joining MSC, Prof. Cheng was a Chair Professor of Mathematics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests encompass Differential geometry, Geometric Partial Differential Equations and Game Theory. His remarkable contributions include comparison theorems of Laplacian eigenvalues on Riemannian manifolds, the maximal diameter theorem in Riemannian geometry. Professor Cheng received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1974 from the University of California at Berkeley, under the supervision of S. S. Chern. Prof. Cheng chaired the Mathematics Departments of both the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in the 90s. In 2004, he became the Dean of Sciences in HKUST. He was awarded the 2007 Chern Prize for his fundamental contributions to the geometric study of eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of Laplacian. In 2012 he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
